The death of a teen-aged basketball player from so-called "look-alike" pep pills (made from OTC ingredients) drives Quincy to organize community action to close a store that sells the highly dangerous, but legal, pills.Ī mysterious " Saturday night special" gun is responsible for the deaths of a man, a young boy, and a cop, and Quincy is determined to find the gun to stop the carnage in a twist ending the stolen gun is returned to its owner but the weapon accidentally causes the death of a young child. Searching for a way to improve the way he interacts with grief-stricken family members, Quincy seeks advice from Dr. Astin's foster son (in a wheelchair after an auto accident that killed his parents) is having trouble adjusting to his new life until the boy is sent to the ranch. The landowner of an equine therapy ranch for handicapped children is murdered by the landowner's nephew, but the murder is observed by a mute child who works at the ranch, and the nephew plots to eliminate the witness. In an episode that exposes the weakness in DUI laws in the early 1980s, a prominent lawyer (with a blood-alcohol level of 0.21) hits and kills a pedestrian, and when Quincy discovers the driver will only receive probation and a small fine, the coroner is determined to change the law, but later changes gears when his investigation veers from DUI to murder. When hearing the trauma center may have to close due to red ink, Quincy spurs into action to stop the closing and prove the need for more trauma centers. episodes No.Ī woman fleeing from an unknown person falls down an escalator at a high school job fair and suffers from amnesia, which prevents Quincy from determining who was chasing her and why someone wants her dead.Ī father and daughter injured in a car accident have very different outcomes the father survived serious injuries at a trauma center and the daughter died from less serious ones at a closer, but non-trauma, emergency room. As I see it, all the forensic dramas of today pale by comparison.See also: List of Quincy, M.E. Who cares whether aspects of the show are predictable or whether it is particularly realistic? I for one remain a great fan of the series. (These may have improved during the intervening decades but alas, the TV series portraying them have not.) Also, many issues equally relevant today were explored, including child abuse, fad diets, alcoholism, child pornography, and so forth. The series gave us a glimpse into the forensic techniques and research of that era. Each episode sees him ferreting out some new case of foul play, aided by his faithful Oriental lab cohort, Sam, engagingly played by Robert Ito. Quincy is always professional but also personally engaged in the victim's plight. He is always the underdog's champion, indignant at the crimes & cover ups of the wealthy and influential, and not hesitant to ruffle a few feathers. Jack Klugman is brilliant in the role of the smart & tough, kind hearted & principled, grumpy but charismatic coroner. Yes, Quincy has his 'relationships' with beautiful young women, but they are portrayed light heartedly, with humour and minimal focus. By contrast, Quincy is very engaging but also optimistic. Crossing Jordan is yet another dark tale and generally as concerned with Jordan's sex life as with crime investigation. Why people view this as entertainment befuddles me. No opportunity is lost to display blood and guts, generally at the expense of character and plot. Cold Case Files is bearable (but no Quincy) while CSI is both dark & stark and far too graphic. I absolutely loved this series about a coroner's experiences, and have tried in recent years to find a TV replacement, all to no avail.
